Networking not your forte?

Do you have a friend who you have lost touch with? Someone who used to be rather close, but the connection isn’t quite there anymore. Why do you think that is?

I bet you think about them sometimes but when it comes time to picking up the phone and calling you just feel uncomfortable or put it off because they never made effort to stay in touch.

Now imagine that same friend after so long calls you, you see their name and with such excitement answer the call so ecstatic to talk to them and they lead with “hey, I know I haven’t been in touch but could you do me a favor?”

That smile suddenly turns into a frown and you are just lost for words. In shock at the insincerity and non-warmth of their phone call.

Believe or not this concept translates to your clients as well. How you ask? And I know you know where I am going with this… as a business owner it is of utmost importance to stay in touch with your clients and it shouldn’t always be about business, not directly anyway.

Create a bond, call to invite them to an event your business is involved in, present an offer that you feel they personally can use.

… because you sell a service in the area it is very important to be present and support community events. Network with your customers and other business partners, be that familiar face they love to see and talk about later, and most important… have fun with it!

Now, let’s go back to that “old friend” story, only this time that old friend calls you with a warm invitation to happy hour. They’re in town and they would love to see you and just catch up.

You happily accept and after you both indulge in a drink or two, they bring up a favor they need from you. Would you react differently? Ask yourself why?

I know some of you may be thinking “I feel anti-social I can’t always put myself out there” or “I just don’t have the time to network for my business” well guess what?
